Phnom Penh
There is not a lot prior research done about Phnom Penh before stepping foot on the city. All I know is the simple fact that it is the capital city of Cambodia. My travel partner filled me on the other well-known fact that Phnom Penh holds one of the world's darkest prostitution ring. Uh huh... Definitely didn't know that.
Definitely did not see a lot of that in the open. Not until we started looking. The city reminds me a lot like Jakarta, back in its simpler, less advanced days. Cambodians are generally very friendly, and there's little urgency in the way people move about in this city. The streets are busier and bigger than Siem Reap, but even then things kinda move in its own pace.
If you only have time for one thing in Phnom Penh, then it should be Toul Sleng. The school turned concentration camp during Khmer Rouge era genocide often referred to as S-21. The moment your foot step on to the grounds, immediately you could felt the load thrown into your heart. All of a sudden, pain and misery gains a form in the remnants of atrocities; one human to another. There is no limit to what human beings can do. Good or bad.
